Protective Against Cervical Cancer 7 Recommendations

Protective Against Cervical Cancer 7 Recommendations

"Cervical cancer", popularly known as cervical cancer, is known as the 7th most common type of cancer seen in women in our country and in the world. As with most cancers, early diagnosis is vital in cervical cancer. Therefore, regular examination and smear testing, as well as physicians' recommendations, are necessary to capture lesions before cancer occurs. From Memorial Diyarbakir Hospital Gynaecology and Obstetrics Department Dr. Ezgi Roza Gül gave information about cervical cancer and prevention methods.

Important risk factors for HPV and smoking

Although the cause of cervical cancer is not fully known, some risk factors increase the likelihood of cancer. The most important risk factor for the development of cervical cancer is HPV. It has been determined that some types of this virus, which has more than 100 types, play a role in the development of cancer. HPV is transmitted sexually. It may cause genital warts as well as no findings. In addition, smoking is an important cause for cervical cancer as in all cancers.

Early diagnosis possible with Smear test

Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that can be controlled by regular examination and screening programs and can be treated when diagnosed early. Today, the most common method used in screening for this cancer is the PAP smear test. With the smear test, which every woman with active sexual life should have once a year, abnormal structures that have not yet turned into cancer in the cervix but are preliminary lesions of cancer are detected and the patient is fully recovered.

Regular control is very important

All women over the age of 21 who have started active sexual life should have a smear test once every 3 years. If an active sexual life has started before this age, it is recommended to perform a smear test within the first three years from that age. Tests should not be disrupted during menopause. After the age of 65, if the patient has at least three normal smear test results until then, smear tests can be terminated with the knowledge of his doctor. In addition, if a suspicious situation is observed in the smear test, the test can be performed at more frequent intervals or further examination can be applied.
