General Method of Breast Reduction

What is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction, like breast augmentation, is one of the most preferred applications by women. This operation is performed for complaints such as the breasts being too large compared to the body, neck and lower back pain as a result of the weight it causes, limitation of physical movements and clothing, and rash under the breast. In this sense, it is an application that aims to ensure the comfort of people rather than an aesthetic operation.

Who is Suitable for Breast Reduction?

If the breast tissue is in large sizes that may cause pain, it is necessary to remove it surgically. Breast reduction surgeries are preferred because of the health problems they cause rather than aesthetic purposes. For this reason, in cases where there is a medical necessity, the age limit of 18 is not sought.

Breast reduction surgery is performed on female patients who have completed their breast development and do not have a risky mass in their breasts and complain about the size of their breasts. Breast reduction surgery can also be performed in men with feminine breast tissue development. This operation is performed to increase the comfort of people rather than for aesthetic purposes. Many women experience serious difficulties in their physical activities because of their large breasts. Breast reduction surgery is generally not performed before the breasts have developed. However, this operation can also be applied to young girls with serious problems.

What are the advantages of the breast reduction procedures?

Aesthetically, it eliminates unwanted appearances such as sagging. In addition, it also provides relief from back and lower back pain caused by heavy breasts. Furthermore, the larger the breast tissue, the greater the risk of breast cancer, so breast reduction procedures reduce the risk of breast cancer.

What are the disadvantages and risks of breast reduction procedure?

As with any surgery on this scale, breast reduction has certain risks. Although precautions are taken against all of these, unforeseen situations may occur, but the necessary interventions to overcome all of them will be carried out by the surgical team.

The most common risk in the first 24 hours is bleeding to the operation site. This may occur in approximately 1-2 of every 100 patients. The amount of this bleeding is monitored and if it is not predicted that it will not regress in the follow-up, drainage is performed with a short operation performed on the same night. This does not affect the final aesthetic condition but means an operation under additional anesthesia.

The most common complications in the early weeks are wound infections and healing problems in the sutures that may be related to this. This situation is more common where the vertical scar joins the horizontal scar, where the tightness is the highest.

Since conditions such as diabetes, smoking, and soft tissue diseases increase the risk of this complication, your diabetes and soft tissue disease should be under control before the operation, and smoking should be stopped if possible. This risk is around 2-4 per 100 people. While such cases almost always recover with dressings, in very rare circumstances,  suturing may be required with a local procedure.

What should be considered before breast reduction surgery?

First, during the first examination of each patient, the breast size that will be in proportion with body measurements is determined. For this, the patient's breast size is taken, the position of the nipple is evaluated, details such as how much the nipple will be moved up if it remains down are determined.

Before the breast reduction operation, surface tissue ultrasonography or mammography is requested from the patient. According to the results of this mammography, it is decided whether the tissue removed during the procedure will be sent to pathology. Pathological examination is generally recommended.

Before this surgery, the use of drugs that may cause problems should be suspended. Likewise, alcohol consumption and smoking should be stopped about 1 week before the surgery and should be avoided for a while after the surgery as it will delay healing.

How Is Breast Reduction Surgery Performed?

While performing breast reduction surgery, the basic steps are to move the drooping nipple to a higher point, to reduce the nipple if necessary, to remove the excess skin-breast tissue, and to reshape the remaining tissue aesthetically. Here, the scars vary according to the way the nipple is moved and the tissue removal method. The most common scar is a circular scar around the nipple and a vertical scar starting from that scar and descending to the new fold under the breast. If the amount of breast tissue is large, there may be scars along the under-breast fold. It can be compared to an inverted T.

How long does breast reduction surgery take?

Depending on the size of the breasts and the surgical techniques applied, breast reduction surgery takes around 2-3 hours.

What should be considered after the breast reduction surgery?

  • After the breast reduction surgery, the night is spent in the hospital in terms of follow-ups and if no problem is observed, the patient is discharged the next morning.
  • Heavy exercise should be avoided in the early period after breast reduction surgery, but there is no need for heavy bed rest.
  • In terms of lying position, the patient should lie on their back for 4 weeks after the operation and should avoid lying on their face, especially in the early period.
  • In general, the dressings made during the surgery are not changed until the first control.
  • If there is no impediment after the wounds are checked, the patient is allowed to take a shower.
  • The special bra applied after breast reduction surgery should be used for 6-8 weeks.

What is the price of breast reduction surgery?

One of the subjects that are the most asked about breast reduction surgery is the price of breast reduction surgery. The procedure performed, the type of treatment needed, and the interventions that the patient will receive in the hospital due to their health condition are decisive in breast reduction surgery. At the same time, the price policy of the hospital and the plastic surgeon who performs the breast reduction surgery is also important.
