General Method of Breast Lift

What is a Breast Lift?

They are surgeries that are similar in principle to breast reduction surgeries. The main concern in breast lift surgeries is the sagging skin tissue in the breast. Either this excess skin or a very small amount of tissue is removed with special drawings. The sagging nipple and breast tissue are shaped to obtain a more upright and fuller breast.

Who is eligible to undergo breast lift surgery?

It can be applied to people who have breast sagging. As a matter of fact, a breast lift is applied in cases where the nipple is located at the level of the inframammary fold and below (sagging-ptosis) and there is not much breast tissue.

Breast lift surgeries are generally not performed before the breast development is complete, but in the presence of serious health problems, they can be performed under the age of 18.

What are the advantages of breast lift surgery?

Due to factors such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, and gravity, loss of volume and sagging of the breasts can occur over the years. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts also lose their shape and lose their former fullness. With breast lift surgery, all these effects are eliminated and the aesthetic appearance is restored. In addition, the desired aesthetic appearance can be given to the breasts by reducing the size of the dark skin around the nipple.

What are the disadvantages and risks of breast lift procedures?

After the breast lift operation, the upper parts of the breasts regain volume and become fuller, but breast lift surgery cannot prevent the breasts from sagging again. Long-term sagging of the breasts may occur due to aging or rebirth.

As with any surgery on this scale, breast lift has certain risks. Although precautions are taken against all of these, unforeseen situations may occur, but the necessary interventions to overcome all of them will be carried out by the surgical team.

The most common risk in the first 24 hours is bleeding to the operation site. This may occur in approximately 1-2 of every 100 patients. The amount of this bleeding is monitored and if it is not predicted that it will not regress in the follow-up, drainage is performed with a short operation performed on the same night. This does not affect the final aesthetic condition but means an operation under additional anesthesia.

The most common complications in the early weeks are wound infections and healing problems in the sutures that may be related to this. This situation is more common where the vertical scar joins the horizontal scar, where the tightness is the highest.

Since conditions such as diabetes, smoking, and soft tissue diseases increase the risk of this complication, your diabetes and soft tissue disease should be under control before the operation, and smoking should be stopped if possible.

This risk is around 2-4 per 100 people. While such cases almost always recover with dressings, in very rare circumstances,  suturing may be required with a local procedure.

What should be considered before breast lift surgery?

First, during the first examination of each patient, the breast size that will be in proportion with body measurements is determined. For this, the patient's breast size is taken, the position of the nipple is evaluated, details such as how much the nipple will be moved up if it remains down are determined. Before the breast lift operation, surface tissue ultrasonography or mammography is requested from the patient. According to the results of this mammography, it is decided whether the tissue removed during the procedure will be sent to pathology. Before this surgery, the use of drugs that may cause problems should be suspended. Likewise, alcohol consumption and smoking should be stopped about 1 week before the surgery and should be avoided for a while after the surgery as it will delay healing.

How is the breast lift surgery performed?

Breast sagging occurs over the years due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, and the effects of gravity. The skin loses its elasticity, loses its shape and its distance to the forward decreases. However, the dark skin around the nipple expands.

Breast lift operation is a smaller surgery than breast reduction operation. During the lifting process, the dark skin around the nipple is reduced in size. If the volume of the breast tissue is sufficient, it is possible to shape and lift it.

If there is both sagging and volume loss in the breast, it is necessary to increase the volume with a silicone prosthesis. Women can decide on this difference by looking at the volume of their breasts in the bra.

This operation does not stop the sagging of the breasts, it only restores them to their pre-sagging state. If the patient is considering becoming a mother at a later date, we recommend postponing the operation.

Methods involving various incisions can be used for a breast lift.

  • Nipple circumference
  • Nipple circumference-vertical scar towards the crease (lollipop-shaped)
  • Nipple circumference 'J' scar
  • Nipple circumference 'Inverted T' scar

The technique to be performed in breast reduction surgery is determined by the amount and shape of the patient's breast tissue. Lollipop-shaped incisions are made for relatively small breasts, a 'J' incision is made for medium-sized breasts, and an inverted T-shaped incision is made for large breasts. During the breast reduction procedure, excess breast tissue is removed. For this reason, mammography is requested from patients before breast reduction surgery.

Breast lifting surgery can be combined with breast reduction or breast augmentation surgery. Breast prosthesis can be applied when lifting very saggy breasts. Generally, in cases where the patient's breast tissue is sufficient, breast lift with self-tissue may be preferred. In the breast lift process, the breast is regained volume and sagging is eliminated. The nipple is repositioned.

How long does breast lift surgery take?

A routine breast lift surgery takes approximately 2-4 hours.

What should be considered after breast lift surgery?

After surgery, the breasts are dressed with elastic bandages and gauze. Silicone tubes inserted to prevent fluid accumulation under the skin are removed 3-4 days after the operation. The bandages are removed 2-3 days after the operation and the sports bra, which will be used for a few weeks, is worn. Pain is expected for the first 2 days after the operation. However, it is possible to control these pains with painkillers. Swelling may occur in the breasts in the first menstruation after the operation. Temporary loss of sensation in the first 6 weeks is normal. The patient can stand up the next day of the operation, but heavy work should be avoided for 2-3 weeks. Most patients can return to their social activities and work after 2 weeks. However, activities such as sports should be avoided for the first 1 month, tight bras should not be worn, be gentle with the breasts. In case of unexpected problems such as sudden bruising and redness, a doctor should be consulted.

What is the price of breast lift surgery?

The price of breast lift surgery may vary according to the method to be applied and the content of the applications to be combined if any.
