General Method of Breast Augmentation
What is breast augmentation?
In the breast augmentation process, the current breast volume is enlarged by placing the prosthesis under the breast tissue. During the breast augmentation process, the breast tissue can be lifted and sagging can be recovered simultaneously if there is any sagging and looseness.
Who can receive breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation surgery is most often performed to increase breast size in women who are dissatisfied with their breast size. Apart from this, breast augmentation surgery can be performed for different reasons.
- Breast augmentation surgery can be performed to support the recovery of sagging and volume loss of breasts after breastfeeding or serious weight loss.
- In people with breast sizes or asymmetry due to chest wall anomaly, and
- in women whose breast structure is not developed congenitally, breast augmentation can be performed to achieve breast volume.
- In addition to these situations, breast augmentation surgeries with prostheses can be performed to create breasts during sex change processes.
What are the advantages of breast augmentation?
People who are satisfied with their breast size will have a more attractive appearance. A more aesthetic appearance is obtained as slight sagging is removed. It also contributes to the elimination of psychological problems for people who are not satisfied with their breast size and view this as a problem.
What are the disadvantages and risks of breast augmentation?
Ultimately, there is a surgical process and a foreign substance is placed in the body. There is a small risk of the body developing a reaction against this substance. Sometimes the body may want to discard this substance, and in this case, it may be necessary to perform a re-operation and remove the implant. However, these are minimal risks.
What should be considered before breast augmentation surgery?
Patient interviews are very important before breast augmentation surgery. There are methods that give an idea about how the breasts will be after the surgery. The breast structure of the person can be scanned with devices and the patient can be shown how it will be after the surgery.
In the first examination, the type of prosthesis to be placed should be discussed with the patient beforehand. How much the breasts will be enlarged should be decided. The type of surgery is decided according to the size of the prosthesis to be placed. All sizes of prostheses may not be suitable for all placement sites. For example, it is not possible to place a 400 cc implant under the muscle without damaging the muscle. Therefore, it should be placed above the muscle. In addition, if the current breast tissue is very saggy, placing an implant on the upper part of the breast may increase sagging. Hence, it is necessary to examine the patient in detail and evaluate their demands well. It should be rehearsed with the patient beforehand.
How is breast augmentation surgery performed?
Breast augmentation surgery simply consists of 4 stages.
- The first step of breast augmentation surgery is to choose the incision where the breast prosthesis will be placed.
- Using the determined incision, a surgical pocket is created where the breast prosthesis will be placed.
- The prosthesis that will be most suitable for the prepared pocket should be selected with the prosthesis-like false prosthesis (size, measurer) we have.
- In the final stage of breast augmentation surgery, the breast prosthesis is placed in the surgically prepared pocket.
Before the surgery, prostheses are determined in a certain range instead of a single size, and the copy of those prostheses (false prostheses) is placed in the pocket created and the most aesthetically pleasing one is selected. As a final step, the real prosthesis of the same size is placed.
To summarize, silicones are placed through the 4-5 cm incisions made under the breast. The prosthesis is not placed in the breast tissue. The prosthesis can be placed under the breast tissue or under the muscle in front of the rib cage. The level of application is decided as a result of the interviews with the patient and the examination. Factors such as the anatomical structure of the person and the elasticity of the skin play an important role in making this decision.
It is also a matter of curiosity whether there will be a natural appearance after breast augmentation surgery. The natural appearance varies according to the prosthesis to be applied and the plan to be placed. Since there is not enough muscle tissue to provide naturalness in over-muscular applications, skin thickness and breast shape should be well calculated. Breast tissue, skin, and muscles assist to hide the prosthesis. In addition to the supramuscular and submuscular types, the "Subfacial Plane" is a popular method in recent years. The prosthesis is applied under the thin membrane layer on the muscle. In this way, both the prosthesis is stored and the mammary glands are not damaged since there is no contact with the existing breast tissue. It is a method that will prevent sagging at a high rate as well. There is also a method called "Dual plane". Some of the prostheses can be applied under the muscle and some on top of the muscle. The advantages of both the upper and lower muscles are utilized.
How long does breast augmentation surgery take?
A routine breast augmentation surgery takes approximately 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.
What should be considered after breast augmentation surgery?
After the surgery (after waking up from anesthesia), there is usually not much pain. There may be a feeling of tightness. Enlargement of the breasts can be seen and felt immediately. A special dressing is made to provide the necessary pressure on the chest. In addition, drains can be placed in order to remove any leaks that may occur at the place where the prosthesis is placed. If a drain is placed, these drains are removed after a few days following the surgery. Drains may not be used in patients who have only breast prostheses applied. In the first few days, it is expected to experience numbness in the breasts or, on the contrary, extreme sensitivity. Patients can start fluid intake 6 hours after the surgery. While the patient can be discharged on the same day if the operation is performed in the morning, patients who have the operation at noon usually return home the next day. It is recommended that patients lie on their back for the first week after surgery. Sleeping on the side should be restricted. The patient is allowed to take a shower 2 days after the operation. In this period, the first dressing of the patient is done. On the 2nd-3rd day after the surgery, a sports bra is put on the patient after the dressing is opened and dressing is done. This bra should be worn day and night for 3 weeks. The first 4 days after the operation is the period when possible problems are most intense. Swelling, tightness, and possible color changes are seen during this period and it is recommended to spend this period resting. These changes begin to subside and pass at the end of a week. A few days after the operation, the person can drive and return to their social and business life. After the 8th week, they can also start sports such as fitness, tennis, and swimming. As the edema resolves over time, the shape of the breasts also improve and become natural. It may take 4 or 6 months for the breasts to take their full shape. This period can even be extended up to 1 year. There is no problem with breastfeeding after breast augmentation surgery. Since the breast tissue is not removed during breast augmentation surgery, there is no risk of damage to the mammary ducts. Therefore, after breast augmentation surgery, women can breastfeed their babies without any problems.
